Also make sure you have enough time to get there.
Our outing will be at the Pink Beds in Pisgah Forest, about 45 minutes — barring traffic — southwest of downtown Asheville. We meet on site. Do not rely on your GPS until you make sure it matches these directions or you will very likely get lost. Also keep in mind that once you leave the interstate, you will probably NOT have cell phone signal. You may not have GPS reception either. So make sure you print or save these directions beforehand and follow them precisely.
These directions are from Greenlife Grocery (our local Whole Foods). We recommend buying snacks or even a picnic lunch for after the tour, as well as “using the facilities” while you’re there.
Finally, remember that if you’re planning to bring some of our “catch of the day” to one of our partner restaurants, you MUST make a special reservation (see here).
11250 Pisgah Hwy, Pisgah Forest, NC
Here are two options: one on the Blue Ridge Parkway (twistier and foggier in the morning but great views) and the other down Highway 280 and up through the National Forest, passing Looking Glass Falls and Sliding Rock. These normally take the same amount of time. See Google map of both below.
Either way, from Greenlife Grocery head south on Merrimon (towards downtown), then take a right onto the ramp for 240W. In about 1.5 miles, keep right at the fork to continue onto I-26 East.
To take the parkway, in 5 miles, take Exit 33 (NC 191/Brevard Road). Take a left at the light to take 191 south for 2.4 miles. Turn right for the access to the parkway, then turn right to take the parkway south.
In 18.4 miles, turn left (NOT towards Waynesville) onto US 276. In just under 4 miles, your destination will be on the left. Look for a sign for “Pink Beds Picnic Area,” right before the Cradle of Forestry. See you in the woods!
To take Highway 280, stay on I-26 for a total of 12.6 miles, then take exit 40 for Asheville Regional Airport/N Carolina 280 toward Arden. Turn right onto NC-280 W/Airport Rd. In 16 miles, turn right on US 276. In 11.3 miles, just after the Cradle of Forestry, Pink Beds Picnic Area will be on the right.
