Stony Fork Picnic Area
IF YOU USE GPS, MAKE SURE IT GOES TO THIS LOCATION.
Also make sure you have enough time to get there.
Our outing will be at Stony Fork Picnic Area in Candler, about 25 minutes southeast of downtown Asheville; see directions and Googlemap below. Do not rely on your GPS until you make sure it matches these directions or you will very likely get lost. Also keep in mind that once you leave the interstate, you will probably NOT have cell phone signal. You may not have GPS reception either. So make sure you print or save these directions beforehand and follow them precisely.
These directions are from central Asheville, specifically, from Greenlife Grocery (our local Whole Foods). We recommend buying snacks or even a picnic lunch for after the tour, as well as “using the facilities” while you’re there, as there is no bathroom at Stony Fork.
Finally, remember that if you’re planning to bring some of our “catch of the day” to one of our partner restaurants, you MUST make a special reservation (see here). See you in the woods!
There’s no address, but you can plug in 6 Elf Way, Candler. It’s just after that road, on the left. Make sure your directions match ours below!
Head south on Merrimon Avenue towards downtown for a tenth of a mile and get on I-240 West. In about 1.5 miles, keep right to stay on 240W/26E. In 3.2 miles take exit 31B to merge onto I-40W towards Canton/Knoxville. In 1.7 miles take exit 44 for US 19/23 towards west Asheville/Enka-Candler. In .2 miles turn right onto 19S/23S /US 74 ALT W. In 3 miles turn left onto NC 151/South Pisgah Highway. Stay on this road for about 7.5 miles to just where you enter the woods before the road starts to twist and go up the mountain. There is a big parking area and a shelter and picnic tables on the left.
