Alan is a renowned wild food expert, and when he was approached by the New York Times for a feature story, he invited me to tag along. We were joined by a reporter from the Times and her photographer on the Appalachian Trail in the middle of the night to search two different kinds of mushrooms under a dark sky studded with stars. I’ve foraged with Alan for mushrooms and other wild foods on his wildly popular day tours before, but hunting glow in the dark mushrooms at night is an experience all its own. Glow in the dark mushrooms aren’t poisonous, but they are hard to find even under the best of circumstances. The light they emit isn’t powerful, but when you are lucky enough to find them, the way we did, it’s a major kick.

You can’t learn to forage from a website.
Always learn from an expert, preferably your parents.
